History
http://gestsongs.com/26/flower.htm - Traditional Newfoundland song, but a possible variant of the song Dermot Astore (Irish: A Stór) written by Mrs Julia Crawford[c.1800-1885], poet and composer of more than 100 songs of County Cavan, IE, and set to music by Frederick Nicholls Crouch [1808-1896]. The original Dermot Astore was published in reply to the song Kathleen Mavourneen which was first published in England in 1838 and in America in 1840. Both songs were published in 1840 by Mrs Crawford in a volume titled "Irish Songs"
...little is known of the life of the Irish poet Julia Crawford[c. 1798-c. 1858], but “Kathleen Mavourneen†set to music by the English composer Frederick Crouch became one of the most famous songs of the century.
The Flower of Kilkenny I once loved a flower in Kilkenny and a beautiful creature was she I loved her far better than many, and I know that young darling loves me. She's the beautiful Flower of Kilkenny shall I gaze on her fair face no more? I have roamed over lands and seen many, but none like my Eileen , a stór As she left me she gave me a token, and that was an outburst of tears. And the words that were generally spoken, they've reigned in my memory for years She's the beautiful Flower of Kilkenny shall I gaze on her fair face no more? I have roamed over lands and seen many, but none like my Eileen , a stór For this was the last and fond token, to be given with a fond loving will; And the words that were generally spoken, they've reigned in my memory for years She's the beautiful Flower of Kilkenny - shall I gaze on her fair face no more? I have roamed over lands and seen many, but none like my Eileen , a stór
